Pickwood Magazine celebrates Black History Month 2022

Given the long history of the slave trade, the months of February and March are set aside for remembrance and celebration of their accomplishments and major contributions to their communities. and Pickwood Magazine is joining in that celebration in 2022.

One of the most well-known events in the world is Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month. Carter G. Woodson, a historian, came up with the idea for the Black History Celebration after becoming worried about the lack of attention given to black history in the United States. It began as Negro History Week, with the goal of appreciating and preserving the people’s history, because a race without a history will become a minor part in world thought.

Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Germany, and the Republic of Ireland are among the countries that commemorate it. In the United States, Canada, Germany, and Ireland, February is Black History Month, which runs from February 1st to March 1st. Because it is observed in October in the United Kingdom, it is unique. It is commemorated in February since it is the birth month of Abraham Lincoln (as president, he ended the slave trade in the United States) and Frederick Douglass (he fought against slave trade and it was abolished).

In the US, the black history month is seen as a time to reflect on the legacy of black people who have shaped the history of America. They honour people like Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and others, who didn’t let their backgrounds affect them from achieving greatness. They recognise the achievements of such persons and honour them by organizing series of events throughout the month.

The efforts and contribution of these people in the past have carved a pathways for others which they use as platforms to be heard and has motivated them to do great things.

The 21st century has started experiencing the reward of the sacrifices of these people, the country had it first black president, Barack Obama, who served for two terms. Jay-Z, a rapper and entrepreneur, who has become one of the world’s most successful people. Oprah Winfrey, who started from nothing and became one of the biggest TV hosts in the world. There are others such as; Will Smith, Floyd Mayweather, Kevin Hart, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler Perry, Regina Hall, amongst others. The Black History has proven to be catalyst of hope for black people today, it has shown that American community is shaped by black history.

Black history month continues to be a celebration in reflection of how black people have grown from their struggles by breaking norms and barriers of any kind to attain greatness.
